What are Orthodontics?
Suitable for both children and adults, orthodontic treatment is a way of straightening and moving crowded or ‘crooked’ teeth to improve appearance, bite and oral health.
Treatment Process and Options
You will first have a full consultation and examination with the Orthodontic Specialist to assess your personal treatment requirements, options and costs. The amount of time it takes to re-align teeth can vary from person to person, depending on their individual treatment plan.
The various types of orthodontic treatment are:
Fixed Fixed braces are designed to stay in place until the treatment is complete, they are fitted with temporary brackets and bands which encourage the teeth to move.
Removable Simple treatment can be carried out with a removable appliance, they use a gentle pressure to move the teeth and can be taken out for cleaning.
‘Invisible’ Removable clear plastic aligners can be used to straighten your teeth without the need for metal wires and brackets, making it almost impossible to tell you are straightening your teeth. As an accredited Invisalign user, Sheena can provide you with custom-made aligners designed specifically for your teeth. These aligners are generally worn for a 2 week period before replacing with the next, gradually moving your teeth to the predicted, desired position.
Why have Orthodontics?
Aesthetics: Many people are self conscious about the appearance of their teeth; they feel they look ‘uneven’, ‘crowded’ or ‘wonky. Orthodontic treatment will straighten the teeth to improve aesthetics. Whether it’s a full set of crowded teeth, or just one which sits forward in front of the others, there are orthodontic solutions which can solve these concerns and help you smile with confidence.
Function: Having an irregular bite can damage the long term health of your teeth and gums; crowded teeth can be harder to keep clean which increases the chances of tooth decay and gum disease. Teeth that don’t meet properly can also put strain onto the jaw, which can cause pains and problems with the facial muscles, jaw bone and joint. Orthodontic treatment can be used in order to realign the teeth, resolving these problems and preventing them from progressing.
