Root canal treatment is performed to save teeth which would, otherwise, need extracting (taken out). It becomes necessary when the nerve of the tooth is infected, through decay or injury.
To do a root canal filling the dentist will anaesthetize and remove the infected pulp (the area of the tooth which causes pain) with a mixture of hand instruments and a drill. The canal is then cleaned and shaped to fill. A temporary filling will be placed to allow the tooth to settle, at your next visit we will check the infection has cleared and permanently fill the tooth.
In the future the tooth may need a crown for further strength and protection, but the dentist will keep this under review.
